Congratulations on your decision to remodel your kitchen! This is such an exciting time. There are so many things to consider; options for cabinets, appliances, flooring, backsplashes and sinks seem endless.
Sinks are probably one of the most often used items in your home; therefore, you should give your kitchen sink the consideration it warrants, as you will be living with this decision for many years to come. Here are some helpful tips and information to help you make your decision easier.
Sinks come in many different sizes and materials; there are 3 basic mounting styles.
- Top/Drop In Mount – The simplest and easiest to install, the sink is literally dropped into a hole in the countertop; the rim around the sink holds it in place with adhesive. Typically used with countertop installations that is not made of a solid surface.
- Bottom/Under Mount – A hole is cut in the countertop and unlike the drop in mount; the sink is installed under the counter with the lip secured against the bottom of the countertop. This type of installation can only be used when the countertop is made from stone, butcher block or some kind of material that leaves a clean edge when cut.
- Farmhouse/Apron Front Mount – They are generally supported from below the countertop, rather than adhered to the countertop. They can be installed as under mounts, drop ins or their edges flush with the countertop. Growing in popularity, but typically used more in traditional style kitchens.
The under mount and farmhouse are considered the more aesthetically pleasing looks than the drop in, but of course it is an individual preference..
- Stainless Steel – Stainless steel sinks are very popular and becoming very popular in farmhouse sinks. Consider the gauge of metal used, the lower the gauge, the thicker the metal, the thicker the metal, the “quieter” the sink will be.
- Granite and Quartz Composite – They are made by combining crushed granite or quartz with a resin filler. They are tough and highly resistant to stains and scratching; typically granite tends to hold up better than quartz.
- Copper Kitchen – If you’re looking to make a bold statement then copper sinks are the way to go. They are typically handmade by craftsmen and each piece will have its own unique bold patina. High-quality copper sinks are long-lasting and resistant to rust and are a natural anti-bacterial agent. They are also resistant to stains an discoloration, although susceptible to scratching, but this only adds to its character.
- Cast Iron – The bright, glossy enamel finish is very appealing and can last for decades, as the enamel finish, which is actually melted glass fused to iron, is extremely tough and is excellent at resisting stains and scratches, easy to clean and not likely to show water spots.
- Fireclay – Fireclay has a timeless, appealing appearance, and are often used in farmhouse sinks. This is a type of ceramic sink; they aren’t carved but molded at extreme temperatures. Unlike other types of sinks you will be limited in choices in regards to color, styles, and finishes; white and off white are the most common color. Fireclay can be more prone to cracking and aren’t indestructible; the enamel can chip from the impact of a dropped pot or glass.
One bowl, two or maybe three; how many bowls and sinks do you want?
Installing multiple bowls and/or multiple sinks gives the homeowner more options and allows for multi-tasking and for more than one “cook” in the room. For large families or for those who entertain often may consider having a main sink with a split bowl for normal usage; a secondary sink for entertainment use installed on a separate counter space or island.
